Shave for a cure

Halcyon Landing’s home owners are always keen to help a worthy cause and this year a group of 90 came together to shave or colour their hair for ‘The World’s Greatest Shave’. As event regulars, this year the charitable home owners from Bli Bli raised more than $20,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation, taking the total from previous years to in excess of $60,000. For many of the group it was about doing their bit for a cause close to their hearts, with some being personally touched by the disease.

It was the third time Community Manager Donna Osborne has lost her locks as part of The World’s Greatest Shave. “For me, it’s in the honour of every single person in my life who has passed away from a serious illness,” she said. “Shaving your hair off for some people can be quite a challenge, but it’s nothing compared to what those suffering from Leukaemia go through. “This is a great way for everybody to participate in a worthy cause and have fun while doing it”.

The Leukaemia Foundation’s Community Fundraising Officer of the Sunshine Coast and South Burnett, Megan Blears, praised the Halcyon Landing home owners for being involved.

“It’s fantastic to see that the Halcyon Landing community is so involved – there’s an amazing team of people here who have participated for a number of years now,” Ms Blears said.

Crafty cuts raise funds

The Halcyon Parks home owners have continued to pull together and support their local hospital by making cards, knitting teddies, crochet rugs and other crafty items.

The craft group recently presented the Caloundra Hospital Auxiliary with a cheque for $7,000 raised from the sale of their knitted items over the previous year.

Year after year, the dedicated home owners donate their time and effort for this worthy cause, having contributed a total of $107,000 to the Caloundra Hospital to date.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Kevin Hegarty thanked the auxiliary members for their tireless efforts in achieving this significant fundraising achievement.

“Each and every volunteer should feel rightly proud of the difference they have made and continue to make in support of the delivery of healthcare to our community,” Mr Hegarty said.

There’s no stopping this crafty bunch who are already back to the knitting needles helping each other with new ideas and projects.

It must be the soil

Gardening enthusiast Neil Smith couldn’t believe his eyes when he uncovered a basketball sized sweet potato weighing in at a massive four kilo’s!

“I had to use the high pressure hose and a garden fork for about 10 minutes before it wanted to move,” Mr Smith said.

“When I finally got it out, I thought to myself it would make a good door stop”.

The Green Team at Halcyon Landing have been producing some of the largest produce home owners have ever seen, including the ‘Big Tomato’ which caused quite a stir after being on the vine for four months last year.

Not only are there tons of veggies, the garden also has a citrus orchard providing fresh fruit for the whole community.

Halcyon Landing Community Manager Donna Osborne said the produce was very popular within the community.

“Home owners like that they can access home grown produce which is sold by the Green Team for about half the price of what it costs at the grocer,” she said.

“It’s an excellent initiative that gets everybody engaged in the community and promotes consumption of healthy, organic food”.

The Green Team sells the produce every Friday night, with all proceeds going back into the group to produce more quality fruit and vegetables.
