Sue jumps for a cure!

Here is a wonderful story involving the exploits of one of our home owners at Halcyon Parks. This heart-warming letter was sent in by Paul Murdoch, husband of the quite remarkable, Sue!

Hi Kate,

In 2009 Sue and I were blessed with the birth of our beautiful granddaughter, Summer Murdoch. She has and will continue to give us many enjoyable moments as she travels through her journey of life. However, at 18 months of age she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. The family, and in particular her parents, have coped with the disease, but as with the many other medical conditions we all hope and pray that the day will come when a cure is found.

Like most grandparents, Sue would do anything for her grandchildren, so I volunteered her to assist the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in their latest fundraising endeavour. It was quite simple. All she had to do was raise $1,000 and then jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane at 14,000ft.
My daughter-in-law and her 17 year old daughter also agreed to participate which resulted in three generations of girls in the one family all simultaneously “Jumping For a Cure”. My son would have loved to participate but he is on active deployment with the Defence Force in Afghanistan. He is very proud of what his girls are doing.

I would have volunteered to jump, but someone had to look after my granddaughter and move the mattresses around at the landing site (and take photos – well someone had to do it!!).
Saturday dawned as a perfect day with only a few clouds and no rain in sight. The plane took off from the Sunshine Coast Airport, climbed to 14,000ft, they jumped out free falling 9,000ft in 65 seconds at 240 kph and at 5000ft the parachutes opened. They then glided for five minutes landing gracefully on Coolum Beach. It was easy and I wasn’t scared at all!

What a great effort from the three girls and they raised over $4,000. In total with 55 participants in Queensland, the total raised was in excess of $83,700. On a personal note, I am extremely proud of what Sue and the girls in my family have achieved – keeping in mind Sue will not even go on the rides at Dreamworld.

We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those wonderful people in our community who contributed donations and support for what Sue was doing. It is further proof that life does begin at Halcyon.

Regards,

Paul Murdoch
