Active bodies… active minds

Under the expert eye of Halcyon Personal Trainer, Kyleigh Hurle, 10 very committed home owners recently took on and completed the ‘Active Bodies’ ten-week challenge. The challenge followed up on the success of previous Halcyon Health and Wellness Programmes, but this time there was a twist.

Firstly they had to be already physically active within the community and secondly they had to be a couple! The purpose was to take the five couples who were primarily healthy, already active and enjoying life and introduce them to something new.

“My objective was to show the five couples a different road to take to achieve a better result, taking their lives from great to even greater,” said Kyleigh.

The comprehensive programme included various physical aspects, guidelines to healthy eating and personal challenges. Each week the participants attended group information sessions, group circuit training and special one-on-one meetings with Kyleigh. Weigh-ins and ‘before and after’ photos were taken to record the results.

Participants Malcolm Wright and his wife Rosemary, who lost a total of 10kg and 37.5cm between them, were amazed by the outcome and are now planning a walking trip through Europe.

“I did not think that I would ever be able to reduce my weight to what it was 25 years ago or that I would be able to reduce my waist size significantly. Nor did I think that I would be able to achieve the level of physical fitness that I think I had 40 years ago,” said Malcolm.

Rosemary meanwhile, celebrated by buying her first ever bikini. “I am excited to feel firmness where there was once flab. My new body shape is one I’ve never had in my life,” she said.

Programme Director Kyleigh Hurle said the wide range of recreational facilities and social programmes available to home owners would make it easier for the couples to stay committed to a healthier regime.

“Everyone is determined to keep on track after seeing how their hard work is paying off in terms of feeling better physically and mentally,” she said.

“Having facilities on the doorstep and a supportive peer group nearby will help them stay on this healthier path they have chosen.”

At the end of ten weeks the results spoke for themselves. Collectively they shed over 40kg and took a total of 187cm off their waistlines!

Good health is just across the road

Lengthy trips into town to see health professionals are just another worry that home owners at Halcyon Waters can cross off their list with the opening of the Mater Health Centre, Hope Island. Just a short stroll across the road, the Mater Health Centre is the Gold Coast’s first multi-disciplinary medical centre and home to a comprehensive range of health services.

Specialist suites, allied health services, radiology/medical imaging, the Mater Pharmacy and Mater Pathology Collection Centre are just some of the services offered along with general practitioners (QMedical), dental practitioners, podiatry and physiotherapy practices.

Already home owners like Carol Samuel are making the most of the close proximity and the quality of care on offer at the centre. After returning from a recent overseas trip, Carol found out first hand the value of having the Mater Health Centre at her doorstep. Initially she required the services of a dentist who then had to refer her to a specialist to treat complications to the initial complaint. She was then referred to another specialist, a cardiologist, in order to ensure that the long-term infection had not damaged her heart.

“Thanks to these professionals I have recovered completely with no ill effects.” said Carol. So for the home owners at Halcyon Waters, whether it’s the doctor, the physio, the podiatrist, the dentist or just a quick stroll over to pick up a prescription, long queues and waits are a distant thing of the past.
