Rules for community living – why we have rules?

17 August 2018 | by Halcyon

Integral to the fun, friendship and freedom of the Halcyon lifestyle, is mutual trust, community spirit and the comfort of knowing your neighbours.

Community living brings so many advantages – such as security, likeminded neighbours and new friends - but it does mean compromising in some small ways for the benefit of everyone.

Helping to shape the unique lifestyle that Halcyon home owners love and appreciate are our community rules or guidelines.

Some of these are governed by the legislation we operate under while others are better described as part of the ‘social contract’ of living at Halcyon.

This is the accepted social agreement ...

Easy riders hit the trail

02 August 2018 | by Halcyon

Each Sunday morning, a group of Halcyon Waters’ cyclists known as The Easy Riders, takes off for a leisurely ride. From time to time, they go farther afield; loading up their custom-made bike trailer and heading off to explore a picturesque corner of regional Queensland. Recently, 10 riders and two back-up crew took on ‘peanut country’ - the 43.5km South Burnett Rail Trail from Murgon to Kingaroy.

Easy Rider Graham Bezant (Beezer) penned this account of the trip and its memorable moments that made it yet another example of the fun, friendship and freedom that Halcyon home owners experience.

Goomeri: The “No ...

Putting the fun in run…Halcyon style

05 July 2018 | by Halcyon

Team Halcyon was a streak of blue amid the thousands of runners and walkers who hit the pavement during the Gold Coast Marathon event at Southport last weekend.

More than 115 Halcyon home owners and staff laced up their runners and donned their ocean-blue shirts to take on the 5.7km Gold Coast Airport Fun Run on Saturday morning.

After a lively group warm-up with personal trainer Jessie, Team Halcyon – representing Halcyon Waters, Vision by Halcyon and Halcyon Greens - was ready for the challenge.

For many it was more of a walk than a run, but thoroughly enjoyable one with good company, ...

Graham’s back in the saddle for charity

08 June 2018 | by Halcyon

Halcyon Greens home owner and retired firefighter Graham Flack has once again pushed himself to the limit by cycling 750km in his eighth Bike4Burns charity ride.

The huge distance was covered in a week by a group of 46 firefighters, retired firies and emergency services colleagues who took the ‘long, long way’ from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, via Toowoomba.

Their efforts raised more than $30,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation to spend on burns research - a cause close to their hearts.

Graham and the other Bike4Burns riders took off in Southport and cycled through Boonah, Killarney, Toowoomba, Blackbutt, Toogoolawah and Mt ...

Lakesiders rally to pickleball

08 June 2018 | by Halcyon

The game with the funny name is catching on at Halcyon Lakeside.

Around 30 home owners have jumped on the community’s purpose-built courts to play pickleball, which blends elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

Among the enthusiastic pickleball cohort is Dott Muller who enjoys the new sport so much that she coordinates and coaches pickleball at Lakeside, a role she shares with fellow home owner Christine Dixon.

“It’s something that could take off here and it’s certainly a game that everybody can play,” Dott said.

“The beauty of it is that it’s played a badminton-size court and you don’t have to run as ...

Bonny babes light up Nana Joyce’s life

08 June 2018 | by Halcyon

THERE’S nothing like a comforting cuddle with nana, and the lucky youngsters at Bonny Babes Childcare Centre at Hope Island have their very own ‘Nana Joyce’.

She is Joyce Hartley, a Halcyon Waters home owner who decided to volunteer at the kindy after losing her beloved husband, David, after almost 61 years of marriage.

“When you lose your husband it’s like half of you is gone,” Joyce said.

“This is the best thing I could have done to get me out of myself and to stop feeling sorry for myself.

“It’s given me a reason to get up in the morning.

“It’s a nice feeling; ...

Adversity brings out the best in Nerida

08 June 2018 | by Halcyon

Turning decades of adversity into years of generosity has earned Halcyon Glades home owner Nerida Smith the prestigious Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for community service.

71 and going strong

08 June 2018 | by Halcyon

Life at Halcyon Glades makes it easy for confessed ‘gym junkie’ Terry Tysoe to satisfy his appetite for action.

At 71, the former boxer, body builder and competition powerlifter, hits the community’s gym three times a week and plays competitive lawn bowls and golf with fellow home owners.

Such is his fitness level that Terry can drop and pump out 50 push-ups and is able to shoulder press the maximum weight on the gym’s station machine.

Happily, he has no arthritis, joint issues or blood pressure problems holding him back.

“There’s nothing that really inhibits me,” he said.

“I’m not on any medication, and not ...

Games shape golden memories for team Halcyon

02 May 2018 | by Halcyon

The athletes and the crowds have left but the incredible memories are here to stay for the 30 Halcyon home owners who volunteered at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Known as Games Shapers, they were among the 15,000 volunteers who became the friendly and helpful face of the 11-day event.

Third-time Commonwealth Games volunteer Doreen Morrison, of Halcyon Parks, loved that her role as a driver involved so much interaction with athletes.

Doreen drove athletes from Scotland, Wales and tiny island nation of St Helena as they trained and acclimatised on the Sunshine Coast in the weeks before the Games.

“It was absolutely ...
