A passion for pedal power unites Halcyon’s ‘Easy Riders’

27 April 2018 | by Halcyon

They say life is like riding a bicycle: to stay balanced you must keep moving, and it couldn’t be truer for a group of cyclists at Halcyon Waters.

Known as the ‘Easy Riders’, these intrepid cyclists meet every Sunday and head off on all kinds of adventures.

The group has been cycling for six years and is run by four riders who plan and ride all trips in advance to ensure they are suitable for the whole group. They even have their own purpose-built trailer, which has added another dimension to their cycling adventures.

Their past journeys include leisurely Sunday morning breakfast rides, a three-day ride on the Sunshine Coast from Pelican Waters to Tewantin (96km), and a 240km ‘gastronomic’ ride from Pottsville to Deception Bay. This cuisine-inspired outing was made up of seven rides over seven weeks with a gastronomic lunch on the completion of each leg.

They have even ventured overseas to New Zealand, with their first international ride around the Hawke’s Bay wine region near Napier on the North Island. The six-day jaunt saw each day end at a winery with food platters and a few convivial local wines. Amazingly, the average age of the group was 76, with three of the riders aged over 80.

Closer to home, there’s been ‘full moon’ rides down to George’s Paragon Pizza and Wine Bar at Sanctuary Cove.

So, what’s next for the group?

A few riders recently ventured out to make sure the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail was suitable for the group, this included checking out the bakeries, coffee stop and any local brews available. The two-day trip has now been planned and will include the South Burnett Rail Trail from Murgon to Kingaroy (44km) with an overnight stay to enjoy a few festivities before hitting the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail from Coominya to Fernvale (20km), and then driving home to Halcyon.

Come October, the group will head off an 11-day adventure along the Victorian Rail Trails. Rides will include the High Country Rail Trail from Wodonga to Tallangatta, the Murray to Mountains from Wangaratta to Bright, and the Great Victorian Rail Trail from Tallarook to Mansfield. There will be many stops for historical sites, local points of interest and, of course, some pleasurable dining opportunities - always important after a day of riding.

What other sport could you enjoy for not only the exercise but for meeting new people, enjoying time with friends and seeing Australia’s beauty on two wheels?
