Lifestyle showcase seals the Halcyon deal

Just over a year ago downsizing Sunshine Coast couple Des and Vicki Kenny knew next to nothing about living in a Halcyon over 50s lifestyle community.

Today the Buderim retirees are looking forward to moving into their new home within the $130 million Halcyon Lakeside community at Bli Bli next year.

They became sold on the Halcyon lifestyle and its simple financial model after attending two of the company’s regular information sessions on the Sunshine Coast.

“About a year or so ago we went to a bowls and information day at Halcyon Landing in Bli Bli and we thought ‘this is where we should end up in a few years’,” Des says.

“It introduced the concept to us and it really appealed.

“We want a more manageable lifestyle that would allow us the freedom to pursue new interests and travel instead of constantly maintaining our home.

“When starting out it can be quite overwhelming with the different options out there, those being units, villas and retirement villages. They all come with different benefits and costs, we wanted to make sure we made the right financial decision. There is a lot of information to digest.”

The Kenny’s followed up some months later with another information session held at the Maroochy River Golf Club. The one hour question and answer session gave them the opportunity to get a better understanding of how lifestyle communities designed for over 50s works.

It was the clear, transparent information received at the session that fast-forwarded their downsizing plans and led them to purchase in the Lakeside community, Halcyon’s seventh community.

“It reinforced what we’d seen before at Halcyon Landing,” Des says.

“We had a look at what was going on and understood it even more, and we thought ‘yes we can see ourselves living in this environment’.

“We loved Lakeside’s location, the newness of the community and its up-to-date amenities.

“And it’s an opportunity to live with like-minded people in our age group who are enjoying themselves.”

Halcyon Joint Managing Director Bevan Geissmann said the information sessions are crucial in assisting potential buyers to fully understand and appreciate the Halcyon model and the great ownership benefits it delivers in comparison to retirement villages. 

“This is a major life decision and one that the baby boomer demographic does not take lightly or easily,” Dr Geissmann said.

“We find that people attending the sessions get all of the information and reassurance they need to determine whether a Halcyon community fits them and their phase in life.

Halcyon communities operate under the Manufactured Homes (Residential Parks) Act 2003, meaning that residents buy their home and lease the freehold land from Halcyon.

Residents pay an ongoing site rental fee, which can be supplemented by rental assistance, but they do not pay stamp duty. When home owners sell, they receive all capital gains with no exit fees or refurbishment costs.

Halcyon is developing over 50s communities on the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and the wider Brisbane region.
